Summer Bucket List – Fun Things to Do this Holiday Season in Canberra

Sticking around this Summer? Great! Here’s a list of 6 fun activities you can do right here in the Nation’s Capital.

1) Visit the Local Wineries

You don’t have to drive far to experience some of the best wineries in the area. Canberra is home to approximately 140 vineyards – all located within 35 minutes’ drive from the Nation’s Capital. Enjoy tasting your way through local wines – you’ll never get confused with “crisp” or “dry” again.

2) Visit a Farmer’s Market

Whether you consider yourself a “Southsider” or “Northsider”, the Capital Region Farmer’s Market is an absolute must! Pick up a jar of local honey, bite into a hot and freshly baked bagel or sample olive tapenade. Ensure that you have some empty shopping bags because you’ll have those puppies full in no time. The market is open every Saturday from 7:30am-11:30am, so there’s no excuse not to go!

3) Have a Picnic

Create the perfect picnic – select the right spot, take a blanket and don’t forget the bottle-opener! Summer is all about enjoying the outdoors and what better way to celebrate the summer season with your partner, family and friends by putting on a great picnic spread. 4) Eat Fish and Chips by Lake Burley Griffin

Voted by the locals as Canberra’s best fish and chip shop, Snapper, is located at Yarralumla’s Southern Cross Club. If you’re after phenomenal seafood, live entertainment, a gorgeous backdrop and a relaxed atmosphere, then head on out – we guarantee you a snapping good time.

5) Grow a Herb & Veggie Garden

It’s always fun getting your hands a bit dirty, especially when it involves a bit of creativity. Growing your own herbs and veggies can be a great way to promote a healthy diet. Go wild planting these top-summer producers– carrots, broccoli, spinach, radishes, onions, tomatoes, dill, lavender, fennel, basil, mint, rosemary, and sage. You’ll be amazed at how quickly this becomes an obsession!

6) Play Tourist in Your Own City

Canberra has a lot to offer, so take advantage of the best museums and attractions in the country! Spend an entire day (or weekend) walking the rooms at the Australian War Memorial, be amazed at Questacon, visit the National Museum of Australia or dive into some books at the National Library. If you’re wanting to spend a bit more time outdoors, drive out to Tidbinbilla to see the koalas or walk up to the Mount Ainslie lookout.

7) National Dinosaur Museum

Jurassic Park fan or not, if you haven’t already walked through the rooms of the National Dinosaur Museum, you need to. Get up close with Australia’s largest collection of prehistoric dinosaurs. You’ll be able to examine some of the oldest fossils and skeletons but best of all, partake in their tours! Make sure to have a look at when the exhibitions are on – you’ll step back in time to 700-million years ago and learn about the reptiles, fish, mammals and birds that ruled plant Earth.

8) Meet a Cheetah

After an experience of a lifetime? The National Zoo and Aquarium will allow you to get up close and personal with a Cheetah. You will find yourself standing in the same enclosure with one of the fully-grown adult Cheetah’s and will be allowed to pat, play and hang out with it.

9) Sleepover at the Zoo

If you can’t get enough of this “wild” experience, book in for a night, or two, at the Jamala Wildlife Lodge and experience five-star luxury. Choose between waking up in a luxurious Giraffe Treehouse, Jungle Bungalow or the Uhaka Lodge. These experiences don’t come cheap, so make sure to visit their website to see if there are any current specials.

10) Fancy a Dip?

It’s only the start of Summer and boy, are we in for a scorcher! Canberra has some fantastic aquatic centres, so make sure you pencil in a time to cool-down. Splash around at Phillip Swimming Pool (and don’t forget to have a skate at their ice-rink while you’re there!), the Dickson Aquatic Centre, Manuka Swimming Pool and if you’re brave enough, leap off the 10m diving board at Civic Pool.
